Coming off the Trump election win, November saw nearly $10 billion flood into financials and bank stocks rally 15%.
But like it always does after a little too much fun, the hangover kicked in and December and January to date have marked an exhale for banks.
While cyclical and financials flows are still strong, “investors” (I use quotes because I’m not sure who these people are) rotated into aggressively into speculative plays like crypto, unprofitable growth, and anything Cathie Wood bough that should probably be bankrupt but somehow is still alive. From a macro standpoint, the dollar strengthened, rates sold off on renewed inflation fears, and headlines stopped focusing on how bullish Trump would be. A hangover indeed, no major catalysts, no clear direction. Just laying around on the couch waiting for time to pass.
But that’s about to change. And it’s a way for us bank investors to profit.
